The Yukon expedition team consisted of six men and three women who set out for the Yukon River in May of 2006. Three of the teammates, Scott, Kari and Kate, were total strangers to Brett before the expedition. Three others, Dave, Ken and Lisa were friends from Brett's University days at Waterloo. Brett had traveled to Costa Rica with Shawn back in High School on an eco-tourism trip and Wesley, Brett’s first cousin completed the team. Due to unforeseen circumstances; the team would finish the expedition minus two crewmates when they pulled into Emmonak, Alaska four months later. One teammate would leave after only a week into the expedition; the other would be seriously injured at the end of July and airlifted out by the US Army.
